Some time ago I had the opportunity to interview Miguel González about the Work of Antonio Caro, I remember very well that Miguel started with the following sentence: “Antonio Caro’s works have the property of not getting old, on the contrary, it seems that with the passage of time rejuvenate. ” Reflecting on the matter of the eternal youth of Antonio’s works, record that story of the Argonaut ship that participated with Jason in the search for the Golden Fleece, they leave in a boat that is suffering breakdowns during the long journey, then they repair it with the materials they find along the way; there comes a time in which the ship has the same form with which it participated, but is built with different materials, it ends up being an object with the same name but different content. That boat of the Argonauts is similar to the cultural superstructures that are transformed more frequently than the infrastructures; that is to say, culture, taking leaps and bounds and sometimes leaving aside those products that belong to a particular era, to introduce them taxonomically in history.
Antonio’s work is embedded in the cultural infrastructure, achieving fractures that reach that superstructure. Like the Argonauts, the images produced by Antonio start with a form and with an objective, but along the way they are transforming their composition, they are constructed with the elements that each sociocultural context provides, so that image produced 30 years ago remains so effective as the first day, it cancels the immanence to which as individuals we are forced by the superstructure every day through advertising, and the Global socio-economic functioning in favor of a transcendence that occurs in the socio-cultural infrastructure where each individual appropriates objects, transforming them into personal and personal ideas. That is why several generations of artists have been influenced by Antonio’s work, however, beyond the limited field of art, he has managed to transmit permanently and effectively, in a more varied field than art: in that of Culture.
Today we have this pleasant possibility to present the book of postcards of Master Caro, which includes 16 images of his works: SAL 1971, A tiger 1973, Defend his talent of 1974, Colombia 1975, Colombia 1976, Flag Colombia 1977, Everything is very Expensive 1978, Tribute to Manuel Quintín Lame 1978, Project 500 of 1990 Stamp of 1993, Achiote 2001, Malparidos 2005, Personal Dose 2006, Misfortunes 2007, La Gran Colombia 2007 and Mining of 2012. Calco, the Integral Human Foundation we thank this generous gift that The teacher does. Personally I want to tell you that the book of postcards is a great satisfaction for me, because the first time I saw his work, it was in my teens I was 13, or 14 years old, I did not know anything about art, and I saw a sticker stuck on a glass of a bus in Bogotá: it was the word Colombia written with the letters of Cocacola, this image captured me powerfully, years later I would find out that it is the work of an artist, who had managed to reach me with that sticker, possibly Antonio did not know of its existence, but that is the extent of the crossing of the works of Antonio Caro.
